Title of the paper:

“Is there a place for narrative in modern high-tech medical practice?”

Abstract: Modern medical practice has multiform patterns. In some areas the importance of narrative is self-evident and the clinical practice as well as the ethics it implies cannot ignore its importance. But what is the place of narrative in highly technological interventions? What are the implications of paying less attention to the patients’ stories in such cases? And how is this practice linked to bioethics, or at least to medical ethics?

Biographical information: A retired senior consultant in Haematology, member of the local Ethics Committee at the Portuguese Oncology Institute, Lisbon (IPOL) He was a co-founder of the Centre for the Studies in Medicine Philosophy at the same Institute. As Invited Teacher he introduced the teaching of Bioethics in the Medical Dental School, in Lisbon.
